What is a TYFH guide?

All TYFH™ guides provide virtually everything you need to know about researching your ancestors in a particular location. They are designed to assist everyone from the total beginner to the experienced genealogist, so researchers can quickly and easily locate vital records and resources. Including birth, marriage and death certificates, census returns, poll books and electoral registers, manorial, church and parish records, MI and gravestone inscriptions, wills directories, maps, newspapers and periodicals and very much more besides. Authors also write a small informative historical description of the town.

What type of publisher is TYFH Publishing?

TYFH™ Publishing Limited are a conventional, yet highly innovative publisher who will publish your work at their own expense. TYFH™ is not a vanity publisher or self publisher and as such they will meet all the costs of production from initial editing to warehousing and distribution. We will never ask you for a contribution towards the cost of printing your book. As we pay our authors a royalty on sales, we therefore have a real incentive to sell copies of every book we publish in order to make a profit.

What format are TYFHguides?

All TYFH™ guides are produced to our standard design, format and layout, with a full colour eye catching cover. This creates a strong visual identity for the series, as well as reducing the overall production costs. Each book measures approx 234mm x 156mm and has 80 printed pages and are bound in a gloss laminated card cover. Each book also contains 8 pages of photographs and illustrations.

Are you only looking for previously published authors to write TYFH guides?

No not really, if you haven’t had anything published before that should not be a problem. We are more interested in attracting authors who have an intimate knowledge of the location and are well acquainted with what records exist and where to find them. Naturally we will also require our authors to display a good understanding of English.

What will a TYFH author have to do?

Every author will be allocated their own dedicated desk space on our TYFH™ net website. This is a password protected work area which can only be accessed by yourself and the TYFH™ staff. Here we will ask you to complete a series of simple forms in order to compile the information we require to build your book.

When you have submitted all your information, our web server will then merge it with our standard text to seamlessly produce the TYFH™ guide to your location.

How long will it take to write my TYFH book?

That really depends on your knowledge, ability and present workload. We set you no real targets so you can work at your own pace. You can log on to your authors desktop at anytime and write as much or as little as you wish. Our website remembers everything you have previously written and displays it when you return. You can add to it, revise or delete any part.

We do not really expect you to have all the information we require at hand, so you must be prepared to visit places such as your local libraries, record offices etc to assemble the data.

Do authors get to proof read their completed book before publication?

Yes, we will routinely send you the full text of your completed book and ask you to proof read and correct any inaccuracies. This is a standard requirement of our author’s contract, and we request that you complete this task within 14 days.

How do I register to compile a TYFH™ guide to my town?

Can I sign up to write more than one TYFH guide?

Yes of course you can, and we can link them together so you can access all your titles from just one authors desktop..

Is there a fee to register?

Yes, we do charge a one off fee to new authors who agree to write a book in our TYFH™ series. Currently this is £45 GBP per title and provides the author with the exclusive right to compile their book for that particular location. It also covers our basic administration charges, the allocation of an ISBN number and the setting up of your authors desktop.

However, we generally waiver this fee to experienced authors and family or local history societies or groups. Either way please REMEMBER this fee is fully refunded to every author after we have sold just 250 copies of their book.

When does the author pay this fee?

We do NOT ask for the registration fee until both parties has signed the completed contract.

How do you calculate my authors royalties?

All authors in the TYFH™ series receive a 10% royalty on the net (or trade) value of every book sold. Often also referred to as the ‘buying-price’. The current published price of a TYFH™ guide is £7.99. You will receive this same royalty percentage on the first and any further print runs for as long as your book remains in print. Please bare in mind that sales of your book in ebook (or digital PDF) form would usually be subject to VAT, so we pay the 10% royalty on the net sales value, minus the VAT element.

We at TYFH™ believe that the calculation of author's royalties should be transparent and payments should be made promptly and efficiently. Every author can access the monthly sales figures for their book(s) from their author’s desktop on our website. Our system also updates the majority of internet generated sales in real time.

How and when do I receive my royalties?

Royalty payments to all our TYFH™ authors are paid directly into either their UK bank account or Paypal account every three months. If at anytime, an author purchases copies of his or her own book from the TYFH™ website we will instantly credit them with any royalties due and deduct it from their payment.

Can I purchase copies of my book at a discount price?

We are delighted when our authors purchase their books from us as we see this as a potential source of extra income for them and a way of increasing the overall sales of their book. We actively encourage authors to become an extension of our sales team by offering a generous 50% discount on all books purchased directly from us. Should they be so inclined authors then have the flexibility to sell their stock to retailers and earn extra income from their efforts.

What is the TYFH™ Author manual?

The TYFH™ Authors online manual will guide an author, step by step, through the task of compiling his or her book from the initial sign up to successful publication. It is carefully written in plain English and serves as an informal reference tool covering in detail what information is required, where it should be located and how to assemble your book. It includes working examples of how information should be entered on your author’s desktop as well as valuable help and assistance should you have a problem.

How do you select the front cover image for my book?

As you have an intimate knowledge of your location we generally ask our author to supply the cover image for their book. Usually, we would expect it to be an old photograph or postcard of a familiar landmark or scene. Something that forms an almost instant and clear visual connection with your particular towns past is appropriate. For example an old street scene, local church, historic monument, local industry etc. But we will also consider a recent photograph providing it meets the same criteria. Bare in mind that it should not contain any prominent up to date features, such as signs, double yellow lines on roads and modern vehicles etc, for example.

Obviously we would expect the image you send us to be as clear and sharp as possible. It should really not be too dark or even faded and be generally clean and bright. It does not matter if it is just reproduced in black and white as we can convert it to sepia tones.

How do I submit my front cover photograph?

There are several ways to submit the front cover image. If you have a scanner the simplest way is to copy the image and upload it to us from the authors desktop or send it to us attached to an email. You can also send it to us saved on a CD. Full information on resolution and how to save the image file is contained in the TYFH™ Authors manual. If you do not have a scanner, you can send the original to us and we will copy the image and return it to you.

What is PLR?

Under the Public Lending Right system, an annual payment is made from government funds to authors whose books are borrowed from public libraries. The payment is based on how many times your books are borrowed from lending library through out the UK. Please visit www.plr.gov.uk for more information.

How do I register for PLR?

Once your book has been published, you should register for your annual PLR payment by visiting www.plr.gov.uk. Every Author is personally responsible for registering with Public Lending Rights Authority as PLR rules do not permit the Publishers to act on their behalf.

What percentage of PLR will I receive?

When you compile a TYFH™ book you become a co-author. We have already commissioned the standard text and you (the author) writes the additional information. All authors of TYFH™ titles will be entitled to claim 50% of the PLR payments for their title. The remainder of the PLR payments are allocated to the author of our standard text.
